Many Medigap insurance companies offer a household discount if two eligible individuals living at the same address enroll in their plans.
The household discount typically ranges from 5% to 14% off your monthly Medigap premiums.
Eligibility rules for the discount vary by carrier, with some requiring both spouses to have a plan with the same company, while others just require living with another adult.
You can score a discount when you're buying shoes, a car, an appliance, or even an airline ticket — but what about health insurance? Most people don't think of Medicare Supplement coverage as something you negotiate or discount. Fortunately, there's a lesser-known break available to many policyholders: the household discount.
If you're enrolling in a Medicare Supplement plan — or already have one — this could mean meaningful savings on your monthly premium. Here's what you need to know.
When you sign up for a Medicare Supplement Plan, you could qualify for a household discount of up to 12–15% off your monthly premium — a reduction that adds up quickly over the course of a year.
That said, eligibility isn't automatic. Whether you qualify — and how much you save — depends entirely on the insurance carrier. Rules and discount percentages vary considerably from one company to the next, which means shopping around and asking the right questions matters more than ever.
The most straightforward scenario: you and your spouse enroll at the same time, with the same insurer. In that case, both of you are likely eligible for a discount. But the rules can be more nuanced than that.
Some carriers extend the discount to married policyholders even if their spouse enrolls at a different time — not simultaneously. Others don't require spousal status at all; simply sharing a residence with another adult over a certain age for at least 12 months may be enough to qualify.
Note: Because Medicare is individual insurance, you and your spouse are not signing up for a joint policy — ever. Each person will have their own separate Medicare Supplement Plan and receive a separate bill. The household discount simply reduces the premium you each pay individually.
Also worth clarifying: the discount applies only to your Medigap premium. It does not reduce copays, deductibles, or any other out-of-pocket costs associated with Medicare.
One important distinction: the household discount applies exclusively to Medicare Supplement plans. Medicare Advantage plans — which often carry $0 premiums to begin with — are not eligible for this type of discount.
