The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs from October 15 to December 7 each year, allowing changes to Advantage and Part D plans.
If you are satisfied with your current coverage, you do not have to make any changes; your plan will automatically renew for the next year.
Changes made during the AEP take effect on January 1 of the following year.
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)—running from October 15 through December 7—is a critical window for your financial and physical health. As the airwaves flood with insurance commercials, our advising team fields hundreds of calls. The most common question we hear is:
Legally, no. There is zero requirement to switch your coverage. However, simply letting your plan ride without a thorough review is a massive financial risk. You must scrutinize your current plan's updated benefits document (the Annual Notice of Change) if you have experienced:
This confusion often stems from years spent on corporate health plans. During your working years, you likely had to proactively "opt in" to your employer's health plan every single autumn. Employer plans also frequently overhauled their pricing and provider networks, making annual engagement mandatory.
Medicare operates on an auto-renewal system. As long as you continue paying your premiums, your current plan will automatically roll over into the next year. If you are entirely satisfied with your costs and coverage, you literally don't have to lift a finger. But if your plan is dropping your doctor, raising its deductibles, or no longer covering your essential prescriptions, AEP is your one guaranteed window to escape. During AEP, you have the power to switch between Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans, transition to Original Medicare, and overhaul your Part D drug plan.
If you utilize AEP to secure better coverage, your old plan will terminate seamlessly, and your new policy will activate exactly on January 1, 2026.
Outside of a handful of strict Special Enrollment Periods (like moving out of state), AEP is your singular, annual opportunity to optimize your Medicare coverage. Do not let the window close without reviewing your options.
