Friends Don’t Let Their Friends Get the Same Medicare Plan

Once you reach 65, something curious happens: the people in your life suddenly feel compelled to share their opinions on nearly every major decision you're facing.

They mean well, of course. But well-meaning advice filtered through someone else's circumstances isn't always the right advice for yours. Consider some of the unsolicited recommendations you might hear:

• "I'm living in Washington's Woods Crossing, a gated community with a pool, and you should move here too."
• "It's time for you to kick your son out of your basement so he can learn to live on his own and you can live the way you want to."
• "You should move to Florida or New Hampshire, where there is no income tax."
• "You should get a reverse mortgage and pry some of the equity out of your home."
• "You should sell your stocks and invest in U.S. Treasury Bonds."

You've heard versions of all of it. And you know instinctively what's true: you understand your own life better than anyone else does.

And When It Comes to Medicare Decisions

The most common piece of Medicare advice you'll encounter is some version of: "You should sign up for the same Medicare Advantage Plan that I have — I love it, it covers everything, it works great for me."

But what does "best" mean to your friend? And is their definition of best remotely relevant to your situation? Medicare is a deeply personal decision. Before following anyone's recommendation, take a step back and honestly assess whether your health coverage needs align with theirs.

Here are the questions that deserve your attention as you choose the right plan for yourself:

• Am I currently still enrolled in an employer's health care program, how well is it meeting my needs, and should I stay enrolled in it?
• Does my spouse also need coverage, and how does that affect my plan choice?
• Are there specific health issues I'm managing — Type 2 diabetes, prostate cancer that requires monitoring, hip replacements, or other conditions — and does the plan I'm considering cover the care I'll need?
• Am I taking an expensive medication that might not be covered under all available plans?
• Am I thinking of relocating? Different regions have different plan options, networks, and coverage structures that could significantly affect my choices.
• Is my spouse managing a chronic disease, and will the plan I choose provide uninterrupted coverage for ongoing care?
• Do I need coverage for a specific hospital or care facility that might not be in-network under certain plans?
• My primary care doctor is approaching retirement — what happens to my care continuity, and which plan networks give me the best replacement options?
• I rely on a specialist for regular care — what will my specialist copays look like under any new plan I'm considering?

You Need Sound Medicare Advice, Not Opinions

Your friends care about you — but they can only see your situation from the outside. Your situation has details they don't have access to: your health history, your financial reality, your doctors, your medications, your plans for where and how you'll live in retirement. The plan you enroll in today could be covering you for years or decades. That's not a decision that should be made based on what worked for someone with a different set of circumstances.
